Geofences: A Simple Solution with Limitless Benefits

Geofences are a funky concept and they're clearly not just for kids and cars anymore.  Local news reported recently that 17 kayaks were slowly disappearing from a local state park until the park manager equipped them with hidden GPS trackers.  Once removed from the park, the manager received an Email and alerted the police.  To cut a long story short, they caught the thief and most of the Kayaks were recovered while others were sold to unsuspecting buyers.

Using the Axeda development environment to configure a geofence is explained here in the developer site, and it's very straightforward.  The kayak story strikes me as a great example of enabling an otherwise purpose-built product, but it's super low-tech and just waiting for the benefit of wireless connectivity.  As you consider the broader M2M application of geofences to track the location of the family vehicle, or any fleet of mobile assets, don't overlook the simple.  The same after-market GPS capability added to kayaks in this example easily applies to bike share programs and other seemingly low-tech applications.

How far can you take your simple tracker solution with the Axeda Platform?
