Creating an Asset

Normally, you'll never need to add an asset to the platform by hand, since an asset is automatically created the first time it communicates with the platform.  This applies in the case of a real asset, or if you use the asset simulator (which you can find in a pane at the right of this page).  In this tutorial, we'll show you how to create an asset manually, in case the automatic methods aren't appropriate.

When you registered at this site, we created a login to the platform, as well as a model and asset. (The model name is based on the email address you used, so bob@acme.com would have a model named bob_acme_com_model.)  In this tutorial, you'll create a new asset of this model, so the asset will be visible to your account.

You may, but do not have to, create an asset on the platform before you try to connect an agent to the platform and send asset data.  If you do not create an asset in advance, it will automatically be created for you, provided the agent specifies your model.  See the AWP Toolkit Tutorial for more information.

First, launch the platform

After clicking on the Platform Access Link above, a new tab or window will appear.

  • Navigate to the Configuration tab

  • Choose New -> Asset

Give the asset a name and serial number. The serial number must be unique, but the name can be a friendly name. Choose any name but "asset1" because it's already been created and used by the Simulator (it has an agent type called M2M). Select Model (the only choice is the one created for your account) and click Next.

You can choose the default organization and location, or create new ones. These indicate the customer and address where the asset is installed. Click Next.

IMPORTANT!  This next step is one where you cannot just accept the default asset group.

Your account has an Asset Group named after your login email. Select the group and the ">>" button to move your group to the selected groups as shown. This step will make the asset visible to your login. Click Next.

The next two pages don't have anything that needs to be entered: Contacts and Properties. The final page is confirmation. Click Finish.

IMPORTANT!  Confirm that the right asset group is listed on this screen before you press the Finish button.

If your email is bob@acme.com, the asset group will be shown as bob_acme_com_group.
